Sales Engineer’s Update

After a warm September, the weather has started to cool down, and we’ve already experienced the first frosts even in the southern regions of Finland. At the same time, the dust control season, focused on spring and summer, is behind us. However, some special locations still require dust control throughout autumn and winter. At Kemion, we offer highly effective, frost-resistant, biodegradable dust control agents for such cases.

Dust control projects on spring and summer

During the spring and summer, we supplied our biodegradable Eco-Binder dust control agents to several sites where the goal was to avoid the environmental issues caused by salt and protect groundwater areas. In addition, we piloted a new product family, Bio-Binder, based on biopolymers. These products can be used for dust control in various industrial and mining sectors, such as covering stockpiles and dump sites.

Preparing for winter

We have already begun shipping our winter de-icing and ice melting products as contractors prepare for the upcoming winter season. Typically, in Finland de-icing measures are initiated in October when nighttime frosts begin. Early preparation is particularly important, as slippery morning conditions can catch drivers off guard, especially those still using summer tires. Our widely used Eco-Melter products are used for example, in cities, industrial sites, and property management, with a particular focus on groundwater areas where salt usage is restricted.

Traditionally, biodegradable de-icing agents have been used in road maintenance in liquid form, with regular salt sometimes added as a solid. As regulations tighten, the use of salt will continue to be restricted, and solid salt can be replaced with our biodegradable Eco-Melter S de-icing granules, which can be used in combination with Eco-Melter liquids. This allows using biodegradable products even in the most challenging conditions.

This winter's new product

New this winter, we have developed Eco-Melter LBW, a solution specifically designed for bike paths and pedestrian walkways. The name stands for Liquid, Bike & Walk, indicating that it is a liquid solution for walking and bike paths. This product addresses the problems caused by traditional salt, particularly on bike paths. In addition to environmental concerns, salt causes rust on bicycle parts, irritates pets’ paws, and damages plants nearby. Eco-Melter LBW is completely salt-free, biodegradable, and skin-friendly, offering a sustainable alternative for de-icing treatments on paths used by pedestrians and cyclists.
