Excellent results from the first winter season with Eco-Melter CHIPS
During the past winter season, we gained valuable practical experience with the new Eco-Melter CHIPS solution. Eco-Melter CHIPS is a 100% biodegradable alternative to traditional grit. The wood chips are impregnated with an environmentally friendly ice-melting agent, which keeps the material loose during storage and makes it easy to spread. The ice-melting agent also improves the adhesion of the chips to the surface, making the product particularly suitable for pedestrian and cycle paths, as well as yard areas.
Last winter, Eco-Melter CHIPS was used in six municipalities in Finland and two municipalities in Sweden. User experiences were highly positive.
Feedback received included:
- The wood chips could be spread without any problems using existing equipment.
- The wood chips provided good traction for pedestrians and other light traffic.
- The wood chips stayed well in place on icy surfaces and did not sink into the ice like grit.
- After winter, the product did not need to be collected in the same way as traditional grit, but could simply be swept onto the verges.
The experiences from the first winter season show that Eco-Melter CHIPS offers a new and proven alternative to traditional grit.
Versatile solutions for the entire winter season

The formate- and plant-based Eco-Melter range of de-icing and ice-melting products has been designed for demanding winter conditions. The products provide an effective and environmentally considerate alternative, particularly for applications where high performance and low environmental impact are required.
Due to their biodegradability, Eco-Melter products are also suitable for groundwater areas and other environmentally sensitive locations where the use of traditional de-icing agents may be restricted. The products are completely chloride-free, and their pH has been adjusted to be slightly alkaline. As a result, their natural corrosive effect on metals and concrete is lower than that of traditional salt-based products.
Looking ahead to dust binding season
Although winter is still ahead of us, it is worth planning future maintenance needs well in advance. In spring, street dust and dusty gravel roads present their own challenges. Effective dust binding can reduce dust emissions and improve air quality even before streets are cleaned. Kemion’s dust-binding solutions are suitable for, for example:

Our solutions can also be used during periods of overnight frost and do not make asphalt surfaces slippery.
